Perhaps it was the warm glow of the city's Christmas lights, the man in the ascot hat and suit with his welcoming smile, or the distant sound of a live band as I walked into Sommerro's grand entryway. Whatever the reason, this place felt like a step back in time, straight into the glamorous Gatsby era.

Every moment and interaction felt both theatrical and graceful. The interiors were a sensory playground, inviting you to explore every corner of the expansive hotel. The atmosphere was grand and luxury, yet it also managed to feel remarkably homey and cozy and utterly cool.

Sommerro is situated in the former headquarters of the city’s electrical company, Oslo Lysverker that first opened in 1930. The five-star hotel was Norway’s largest-ever preservation project and was reimagined to become Oslo’s first neighborhood hotel; a gathering place for locals and travelers alike.

The hotel’s managing director, Jarle Moen, shared, “What we’ve managed to create is a house, rather than a hotel, where the historical elements of the building really complement new-age ambiance that roots guests firmly in the present.”

why we love it - tl;dr
  • This is the place for people who appreciate good design and art. The hotel commissioned the interior design firm GrecoDeco to restore the historical building, blending the heritage of 1930s Norway Art Deco with contemporary charm. You’ll also find beautifully restored murals by Norwegian artists Per Krogh throughout the hotel.
  • You’ll discover live music in Ekspedisjonshallen every night of the week featuring the hotel’s house band or curated local artists like Swing’it.
  • There’s no shortage of restaurants and bars within the hotel—seven, in fact, from a rooftop Norwegian-Japanese restaurant to an a classic pintxos and wine bar.
  • Wellness is at the core of the experience, with the hotel promoting an 8-hour rule: a daily balance of 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work, and 8 hours of recreation. The hotel’s goal is for guests to leave with more energy than they came with.

the comforts

The hotel’s Art Deco design continues from the lobby to the hallways and makes its way into each uniquely designed room. Choose from six distinctive room types, ranging from the cozy Twin Alcove, perfect for friends or colleagues, to the lavish Junior and Heritage Suites, which feature spacious living rooms and soaking tubs. As a suite guest, you're granted access to the hotel's exclusive year-round rooftop pool and sauna as well.

If you're looking for a truly luxurious and secluded experience, be sure to explore the hotel's Villa Inkognito, which boasts 11 rooms and suites, a separate entrance, and exclusive access to a library, bar, lounge, kitchen, and more.

From seven restaurants and bars scattered across the ground floor to Oslo's first rooftop restaurant, a cinema room, a cozy library, historic meeting spaces, and the crown jewel—an expansive wellness retreat.

The hotel hosts Vestkantbadet, a 1400m2 wellness floor, equipped with the best hotel gym I’ve ever sweat in and a beautiful and historical bathhouse and spa, converted from a 1930s public bathhouse. You can visit the pool and sauna or opt for the IR sauna and cold plunge pool.

the neighborhood

Sommerro sits in the Frogner neighborhood, an upscale and charming residential district. It offers the best of both worlds feeling a bit more quiet, yet still incredibly central to the city center, just a 10-minute walk to the Royal Palace and Nationaltheatret, where the Jul i Vinterland Christmas market takes place each year. It also makes for a very easy transit from the airport on the Flytoget express train.

Nearby you’ll find art galleries, antique stores, boutiques and more. A bit further away you have the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum or head the other way for 30-minutes and find yourself at Vigelandsparken, the world’s largest sculpture park created by a single artist, Gustav Vigeland.

the people

This hotel feels like the ultimate people watching destination. Pull up a seat to the bar at Ekspedisjonshallen and you’ll find yourself surrounded by local businessmen, groups of friends, couples in town on holiday, and even solo visitors. The eclectic mix of guests all come together with their discerning taste and curiosity about the stories everyone brings with them.

Given the hotel’s five-star rating, the crowd is slightly more exclusive and affluent. They appreciate top-notch service, beautiful design, and a well-balanced lifestyle, whether in their daily lives or while traveling.

the tastes

From day to night, you’ll discover you have all you need to keep your stomach satisfied during your stay without ever leaving the hotel.

At the heart of the hotel is Ekspedisjonshallen (Expedition Hall), the all-day dining spot that truly comes to life in the evenings when the nightly live jazz begins. The sunken central bar was once where locals came to pay their electric bills! This is also where the complimentary breakfast is served. You can order à la carte or stroll through the incredible breakfast buffet, overflowing with local goods and classic dishes. Lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options as well.

If you want to branch out, head to the rooftop to experience their signature restaurant, TAK Oslo, which blends Nordic and Japanese cuisine, or visit the street food and bar, Izakaya Bar & Terrace. On the ground floor, treat yourself to an afternoon tea at To Søstre, enjoy an elevated Thai dining experiences at Plah + Ahaan, or visit Oslo favorite Barramon, serving pintxos and wine.

the responsibility

Sommerro is powered on 100 percent renewable energy and during the hotel’s restoration green and locally sourced materials were hand selected to stay in line with the hotel’s commitment to eco-sustainability. They also collaborated with neighbors and local businesses and artists to give back to the community.

Within the rooms, guests will find an empty bottle and taps on each floor for still and sparkling water, ensuring all plastic bottles have been removed from the hotel. Additionally, across the restaurants you’ll discover seasonal ingredients and sustainable, local foods.
